Mabamba Bay Wetland is a recently discovered home for the Shoebill that you look out for in the wetland. Its at this swamp where shoebill tours in Uganda are mainly done. Others bird species at Mabamba bay are the Papyrus Gonolek, White-winged Warbler, Northern Brown-throated Weaver, yellow-backed weaver, Blue-headed Coucal and other swamp inhabitants. Mabamba Bay Marshland was selected as a Ramsar Site as a wetland of international importance in 2006. The wetland because it is home to rare and universally susceptible bird species including the Shoebill (Balaeniceps rex), Papyrus Yellow Warbler, and the Blue Swallow (Hirundo atrocaerulea) the Sitatunga plus other birds of global conservancy apprehension. Besides Murchison Falls National Park, Mabamba Wetland is the only site where the elusive Shoebill can be speckled at any time.
The swamp is internationally recognized and is conserved under the Ramsar Convention. This Convention on wetlands signed in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971, is an intergovernmental treaty which make available the agenda for national action and global collaboration for the safeguard and wise use of wetlands and their treasures.
